Duties and responsibilities

Staff management

  • Day to day line management of registered and student veterinary nurses
  • Undertake appraisals of registered veterinary nurses and student veterinary nurses with the Clinical Services Manager
  • Support and mentor new Registered veterinary nurses and student veterinary nurses
  • Recruitment of nurses in conjunction with the Clinical Services Manager
  • Authorisation of annual leave for student veterinary nurses and Registered Veterinary Nurses
  • Induction of new Registered Veterinary Nurses
  • Nurses rota; organisation of the nursing staff, ensuring that all daily tasks are done
  • Relevant staff training as required
  • Manage your clinic budget and spend
  • Maintain laboratory equipment on a daily/weekly & monthly basis
  • Ensure all nursing staff adhere to health & safety guidelines

Performance management

  • Ensure day to day compliance of clinical protocols and practice procedures manual
  • Drive clinical standards in practice
  • Undertake audits when requested by the Clinical Services Manager
  • Dealing and responding to client complaints
  • Ensure all registered veterinary nurses are up to date with CPD

Responsibilities as a clinical coach

  • At least 2 days with each student per week.
  • Weekly tutorials and time allocated to discuss NPL and set targets etc
  • allocated observation time daily

General nursing duties

  • Undertake nursing duties including theatre, laboratory, radiography, ward and euthanasia duties
  • Assisting the veterinary surgeons where needed
  • Deliver nurse consultations
  • Pricing up of procedures and providing estimates to clients as per the Practice Procedure Manual
  • Ensure stock is managed and monthly stock takes are undertaken
  • Monitor equipment maintenance, including PAT testing and servicing etc
  • Ensure stock and consumables are ordered in a timely manner including oxygen and cremation invoices/collections
  • Maintaining a clean, hygienic and safe practice/building
  • Providing advice and guidance on preventative and ongoing treatment for pets
  • All surgical packs are sterilised within the last 3 months
  • Monitor PPE usage/maintenance
  • Monitor radiography book, checking all exposures and collimation
  • Replacement of x-ray badges
  • Ensure volatile agent is monitored annually, sooner if a change in circumstances
  • Monitor patients, providing the correct standard of nursing care
  • Complete CPD requirements
  • Maintain accurate clinical records
  • Dispensing medication as applicable
  • Reporting of any damage
  • Undertake duty nights
  • Adhere to Practice Procedure Manual and standard operating procedures
  • Follow health and safety guidelines and the nursing team are also adhering to these
  • Reception duties (booking appointments, processing payments, answering telephone calls)
  • Undertake any other duties as required
  • Attend monthly staff meetings

Working conditions

The role is based in a fast paced environment.  Hours will be undertaken on a rota basis and will include evening and weekend working.  When required to sleep in on duty nights, accommodation is provided.

Physical requirements

This role will is a demanding role and will require the individual to be on their feet the majority of the day.
